Daniel “Dan” O’Boyle
Daniel “Dan” O’Boyle, 87, of Hornick, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 6 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa, with military rites provided by the American Legion Hindman-Steele 492 of Hornick. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Daniel E. O’Boyle was born on Nov. 28, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Thomas D. and Olive (Metcalf) O’Boyle. He was raised on the family farm near Hornick, and graduated from Hornick High School in 1946. He studied agriculture at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, for one year. Dan then joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany for two years during the Korean Conflict.
After his military service, Dan returned to the family farm near Hornick, which he operated for the rest of his life. Over the years, he raised many hogs, cattle, and various other animals in addition to planting and harvesting the crop.
Dan was an avid reader and historian. He enjoyed hunting, sports, traveling, cooking, and canning. He was a member of the Hornick Fire Department and of St. John’s Catholic Church in Onawa. He belonged to the American Legion Hindman-Steele 492 of Hornick for more than 60 years.
