Kenneth Hogrefe

Kenneth D. Hogrefe, age 72, of Kingsley, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2019 doing what he loved to do in his retirement years, which was helping a friend complete spring field work.

A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 3:30 PM at the Kingsley Community Center of Kingsley.  Burial was at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.

Kenneth D. Hogrefe was born September 17, 1946 to Helmuth “Pat” Conrad and Arline (Rohlk) Hogrefe.  He graduated from Holstein High School with the class of 1964.

Kenny joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam from 1969-1970 with the 101st Division.  While he was there, he was awarded a bronze medal for his service.

Upon returning from Vietnam, he was stationed at Fort Collins, Colorado until 1972. There he married Deb Conover.  Kenny and Deb returned to Kingsley, Iowa where he ran the Phillips 66 Station for his father-in-law, Claude Conover.  During this time, Kenny finished his degree at Wayne State College.

Upon graduation, he was employed at Sioux Valley Savings and Loan as a Branch Manager until they closed their doors in 1989.  Kenny then worked at the Farmers Elevator in Kingsley for seven years before retiring with United Bank of Iowa after 15 years. He enjoyed working with his clients there.

Kenny was active in the community as an EMT, fireman, and school bus driver. He also helped serve Meals on Wheels.  He was a member of the American Legion for 44 years, serving as the Adjutant General.

He was an avid Iowa State fan, enjoyed fishing at Pierre with Steve and Patti Engle, golfing on Mondays for Senior League, 1:00 P.M. golfing in Kingsley with the gang, Friday night fish fries, and last but not least, Dairy Queen.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Deb of Kingsley; sons Pat (Jennifer) of Peosta, IA and Eric (Mandy) of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren Ashton, Mya and Aiden of Peosta, IA and Torey, Easton, and Tucker of West Des Moines, IA; a great-granddaughter, Paisleigh; a brother, Delane (Linda) Hogrefe of Battle Creek, IA; a sister, Patti (Jeff) Sims of La Vista, NE; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pat and Arline Hogrefe; his parents-in-law, Claude and Eckey Conover; a twin sister, Karen; a sister, Anna Lorenzen; and a nephew, Matt Conover.
