Dwayne Hempel
Dwayne H. Hempel, 78, of Quimby, Iowa passed away Friday morning, September 27, 2019 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in LeMars, Iowa.
Visitation was held on Monday, September 30th from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.
Private family graveside services will be held at the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Dr. Robert Stout will officiate. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.
Dwayne was born on May 28, 1941 at Cherokee, Iowa to Henry and Avis (Wright) Hempel. In 1960, he graduated from Quimby High School, where he excelled in basketball. He continued playing basketball in a town league for a few years.
He had worked as a carpenter for Art Bobolz for a few years. He was married to Karen Springer on September 8, 1963 at Pierson, Iowa.
He had also farmed and had worked for Simonsen’s Inc. in Quimby for 41 years — from 1963 until his health forced him to retire in 2004.
Dwayne was a member of the Little Sioux Red Power Club. He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, attending stock car and sprint car races. He even did some drag racing in his early years. He liked spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Pamela in 1993, a brother Francis in 2011, and two brothers-in-law, Elton and Eddie Springer.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karen of Quimby, Iowa; one son, Paul Hempel of Quimby, Iowa; one grandson, Alexander Hempel of Urbandale, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Larry (Beverly) Springer of Fellsmere, Florida; and a sister-in-law. Joyce Childs of Snohomish, Washington.
